South Africa joins Israel in barring women from singing! Make your voices heard against this!

A letter was sent out by the South African Centre for Religious Equality and Diversity (SACRED) earlier this week letting people know about the South African Orthodox Jewish community's move to ban women from singing at celebratory events.

Included in this letter is a link to a video that was produced in opposition to this discriminatory practice. In addition, an article was published in The Jerusalem Post after an interview with SACRED's chair, Rabbi Robert Jacobs. Read the letter, watch the video, and make your voices heard by supporting this campaign. SACRED was launched by the South African Union for Progressive Judaism (SAUPJ) last July. Read about the launch and SACRED's mission here.

Dear Friends

Last week saw South Africa celebrate 18 years of democracy, and the Jewish Community celebrating 64 years of Israel’s Declaration of Independence.
In SA, our Constitution affords every person the freedom to practice his or her religion. Unfortunately, for Yom Ha’atzmaut, women were barred from singing, and in a last ditch compromise, they were allowed to sing as part of a mixed choir.
The South African Centre for Religious Equality and Diversity (SACRED), took on this case, and have produced a video, which was posted on You Tube. Click here to watch it.
As both personal friends, as well as Progressive Jews, I am sure you will appreciate the video, and what we stand for.
I am asking each of you to please click on the link and view the video and like it on You Tube. Also, please find our SACRED page on facebook and ‘like’ the page, and if you pop over to SACRED website, you are able to sign up and show your support. Share this on your facebook page, tweet about it, and assist in getting as much international viewership as possible.
The reason for asking you to do this… We need to get as much support for this campaign to show the Jewish Communal organisations in SA that we are serious about equality and freedom, and that if they are claiming to represent the Jewish Community, then they need to consider all Jews, not just the Orthodox or Ultra Right!
Thanks in advance, and here’s hoping our campaign hits the right note.
Lynton Travis, SACRED
