A letter was sent out by the South African Centre for Religious Equality and Diversity (SACRED) earlier this week letting people know about the South African Orthodox Jewish community's move to ban women from singing at celebratory events.

Included in this letter is a link to a video that was produced in opposition to this discriminatory practice. In addition, an article was published in …

Conversion Bill: Still the subject of concern

Once again, the Rotem Conversion Bill has become a subject of concern. And once again, our colleagues in Israel, led by Rabbi Gilad Kariv and counsel at IRAC, in cooperation with ARZA USA, the Conservative Movement and the Federations of North America, and with the support of Natan Sharansky, Chair of the Jewish Agency, have addressed the issues.

There is a moratorium to which the Government has agreed, to permit a negotiated solution to the problem, now extending until July 2011.…

Knesset Conversion Bills - A context. By Joan Garson

Chevre

Our challenges continue with respect to the Conversion Issue in Israel. I will summarize here the current state of affairs. As you all know, MK David Rotem introduced a bill (Rotem I) in July to give authority de jure in Israel on all conversion matters to the Chief Rabbis.

The Reform Movement, in partnership with the Jewish Federations of North America…

Arzenu chair's report: Joan Garson, November 2010

I am delighted to share with those members of Arzenu who were not at the last meeting of the WZO and the Jewish Agency for Israel the results of those meetings. The meetings were, in many ways, the first report card on Arzenu's political activities since the Congress.
In my view, we should be very proud of our representatives in Israel and the extent to which they have moved our activities forward, at the same time as we remain frustrated at the need to fight and refight many of…

The Jewish Republic of Israel

Remember this day. It's the day Israel changes its character. As a result, it can also change its name to the Jewish Republic of Israel, like the Islamic Republic of Iran. Granted, the loyalty oath bill that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking to have passed purportedly only deals with new citizens who are not Jewish, but it affects the fate of all of us.
From now on, we will be living in a new, officially approved, ethnocratic, theocratic, nationalistic and racist…

And (religion and) justice for all? By Peggy Cidor

The observant Jewish Left is a rather new phenomenon in Israel – whether Reform, Conservative or modern Orthodox. The creation of Meimad in 1988 was the first time that modern Orthodox Israelis showed an interest in promoting peace and human rights on a political level.…
