Is Sharansky the only one who doesn’t want confrontation at the Western Wall?

In the last two years, the Western Wall in Jerusalem — also known as the Kotel — has become a place of controversy as much as of worship. It’s the site of a battle that has long been waged by a group called Women of the Wall, who are demanding they be able to pray in the women’s section wearing tallits — Jewish prayer shawls — and also be permitted to read from the Torah, rights that the rabbi of…

Petition for pluralism at the Kotel

Help us make the Kotel (Western Wall) a place for all Jews - not just the ultra-Orthodox who are currently in sole control of the holiest site in Judaism as well as the Western Wall Heritage Council, who administers the holy site.

By signing the petition you call for religious pluralism on the Western Wall Heritage Council by opening up the council to members from other streams of Judaism such as Reform and Conservative Judaism as well as secular Jewish…

Today, the Attorney-General’s office announced that the state has decided to follow the advice of the High Court of Justice to start paying the wages of non-Orthodox rabbis in Israel serving their communities, just as it is paying the wages of 4000 Orthodox rabbis. So far, non-Orthodox rabbis in Israel have been paid by their congregations through membership dues.

Conversion Bill: Still the subject of concern

Once again, the Rotem Conversion Bill has become a subject of concern. And once again, our colleagues in Israel, led by Rabbi Gilad Kariv and counsel at IRAC, in cooperation with ARZA USA, the Conservative Movement and the Federations of North America, and with the support of Natan Sharansky, Chair of the Jewish Agency, have addressed the issues.

There is a moratorium to which the Government has agreed, to permit a negotiated solution to the problem, now extending until July 2011.…

The Jewish Republic of Israel

Remember this day. It's the day Israel changes its character. As a result, it can also change its name to the Jewish Republic of Israel, like the Islamic Republic of Iran. Granted, the loyalty oath bill that Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is seeking to have passed purportedly only deals with new citizens who are not Jewish, but it affects the fate of all of us.
From now on, we will be living in a new, officially approved, ethnocratic, theocratic, nationalistic and racist…

IRAC - Loyalty to our values. By Anat Hoffman

Dear friends of IRAC,
Yesterday, IRAC as a leader in the Coalition Against Racism co-signed a press release with nearly twenty other organizations condemning the Loyalty Oath Bill that was approved by the Cabinet and will be voted on by the Knesset in the upcoming session.
We condemn the oath because we take seriously the Declaration of Independence in Israel, a document with which I identify so strongly. During the painful birth of the State of Israel, our nation’s…

In appreciation and admiration - Joan Garson

Many messages of congratulations and thanks have gone out to the members of the worldwide Reform community over the last few days. At the risk of repetition, I want to add my own.
ARZENU was included on the conference calls with the other leaders of the Reform and Conservative streams in Israel and North America, and the leaders of the federations of the United States, which co-coordinated the response to the Conversion Bill. This is a most appropriate recognition of the roles…

Dear Friends of IRAC,
Amazing news. We just learned that the Conversion Bill will not go to vote this Wednesday – a huge success! You deserve a gigantic thank you. Because of your overwhelming opposition, MK Rotem realized that he did not have the support to pass the Conversion Bill at this time. Thank you to all of the organizations and movements worldwide, to all who sent thousands of letters, faxes, and phone calls, and to all who spread the word to your friends, family, and…
