It is with deep sadness that we report the death yesterday, Feb.16, 2010, of z'l Dr. Piri Levy, age 96, mother-in-law of our Executive Director Dalya Levy. We extend our deepest sympathy to Naftali and Dalya and their entire family. May her memory be for a blessing to all who knew her and may her family be comforted among the mourners of Zion.
The Association of Reform Zionists of America (ARZA), on behalf of the Union for Reform Judaism, condemns in the strongest possible terms the attempt on Monday night to destroy Shira Hadasha , a Conservative synagogue in Arad, Israel. The attack comes a year after another attempt to burn down the synagogue and days after an attempted break-in there.
Though the perpetrators of this crime have yet to be caught, this act of vandalism against a non-Orthodox synagogue must be… Continue

Recording of Anat Hoffman at Pro-Zion event held with Southgate Reform Synagogue on Thursday 26th November - Anat talks about the arrest of Nofrat Frankel and the history of women of the wall as well as the work of IRAC
The surprising announcement this week by World Zionist Organization officials that Shas will join their institution drew harsh condemnations from the Reform Movement in Israel. One leader called the deal "a step closer to the WZO's grave." But supporters of the move called it a "historic achievement of joining forces."
"This deal reflects an ideological bankruptcy within the WZO," said Rabbi Uri Regev, a prominent local leader of progressive Judaism. Advertisement

Dear Friends of IRAC,
There must be more than one way to liberate the Western Wall. It’s not only a job for paratroopers, a test that ended in the Six Day War of 1967. The Wall as a national and religious site now needs to be liberated from Rabbi Shmuel Rabinovich’s control. Rabinovich is an Ultra-Orthodox rabbi who has been appointed as rabbi of the Wall by secular leaders in Israel who, like many Israelis, were brought up to believe that there is only one brand of authentic Judaism – Rabinovi… Continue

Dear Friends of IRAC,
Last Friday, Rosh Chodesh Tevet, 153 women found it in themselves to get up early on a wretched, rainy, and miserable morning and walk to the Kotel, for what could be – following Nofrat Frenkel’s arrest one month prior – an unpredictable morning of prayer.
We were women of all ages and denominations, gathered together under a canopy of bright umbrellas that looked especially vibrant on a gray day. We stood at the back of the women’s section to pray, and when it was time t… Continue

Challenging Traditions at the Heart of Judaism
By Isabel Kershner, The New York Times, December 21st, 2009
JERUSALEM — A struggle for the character of the Western Wall, this city’s iconic Jewish holy site and central place of worship, is under way, and it is being fought with prayer shawls and Torah scrolls.
On Friday, sheets of rain obscured the Old City’s ancient domes. But by 7 a.m. about 150 Jewish women had gathered at the Western Wall to pray and to challenge the constraints imposed on… Continue

Solidarity prayer called for women praying at Western Wall
December 10, 2009
NEW YORK (JTA) -- Activists are calling for a day of solidarity at venues around the world in support of the right of women to pray at the Western Wall in "dignity, in safety and in shared community."
The grassroots initiative is being planned for Dec. 17 -- the first day of the Hebrew month of Tevet -- as an act of solidarity with the group Women of the Wall, after medical student Nofrat Frenkel was detained by poli… Continue

We should all be relieved - a great disaster has been averted in the heart of Jerusalem. A woman was arrested yesterday for causing a heinous threat to public order. She was carrying a document so subversive that it has been suppressed and vilified for thousands of years. She also donned an item of ritual wear so provocative that if she had not been stopped by the authorities there might have been cataclysmic results.
The criminal in question was a highly suspicious type, and she arrived in Jeru… Continue

Candidly Speaking: Zionism at the crossroads
Oct. 12, 2009
Isi Leibler , THE JERUSALEM POST
After 2000 years of dispersion, persecution and powerlessness and in the wake of the greatest disaster ever to have encompassed the Jewish people, Zionism rose like a phoenix from the ashes of the Shoah and achieved the impossible. In what must be the most remarkable achievement of any people and unique in the annals of mankind, it resurrected a homeland and empowered the Jews.
After fulfilling its pri… Continue

Last Sunday I was in Montplier, south-west France, with my wife, Rabbi Naamah Kelman and we were with the liberal community, celebrating Simchat Torah with them. It was very moving. There are wonderful people, struggling to maintain a community without a rabbi. Not easy, in general, and certainly not in France where the Orthodox are so dominant.
